White hat is usually defined as the safe and straight kind of search engine optimisation work. A great deal of time and effort is spent on writing high content pages which are both visitor friendly and search engine friendly.

Black hat is the risky kind of seo work using tactics which boil to nothing more than tricking the search engines.

Let's go back to Wikipedia and see what it has to say about this:

Pemani Productions uses methods which are approved by the search engines and we are therefore white-hat.

There are plenty of companies / consultants out there using all kinds of methods to get you high rankings but be aware of vague promises, dubious contracts or outright scams.

Google's indexing and detection system has become very advanced over the years and any tactic you use to trick them into getting high rankings will eventually catch up with you. What happens then. I you are lucky, Google will only penalise the site by lowering its ranking. The worst case scenario; getting blacklisted. This is something you definitely DO NOT want.
